MORAGA, Calif. - In a battle of California women's tennis sophomores, Annie Goransson prevailed in two sets over Tayler Davis in the singles title match of the Red flight of the 2010 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Sunday, Oct. 10. As a pair, the two Golden Bears held the top seed in the doubles tournament but were edged in the final by the second-seeded team from host Saint Mary's College.
Fifth-seeded Goransson opened her day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the top seed in the tourney, No. 60-ranked Jenifer Widjaja of Pacific. As the only unseeded player remaining in the singles draw, Davis upset second-seeded and No. 87-ranked Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's in three sets. Davis won the first set, 7-5, but was pushed to the edge in the second before Poorta claimed a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker. The second-year Bear returned to the court with a vengeance as she blew through the third set, 6-1, to earn her ninth consecutive singles victory of the year.
In the singles championship match, Goransson gave no quarter to her on-court doubles partner as she snapped Davis' nine-match undefeated singles record with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Goransson moves to 9-1 on the season with her only defeat coming in the singles final of the Cal Nike Invitational.
Earlier in the day, Davis and Goransson played on the same side of the court as they took on the second-seeded team of Catherine Isip and Poorta of Saint Mary's in the doubles final. Cal's top-seeded tandem was unable to turn a victory in that match as the home team earned an 8-5 win for the doubles crown.
