PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 1-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova fell to second-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford in the championship match of the 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championship at the Riviera Country Club on Sunday, Oct. 10. The third-year Golden Bear was the first Cal player to make an appearance in the championship match since Susie Babos won the second of her back-to-back titles in 2007.
In a bout that pitted the top two seeds in the tournament, Barte was just a couple of points better than Juricova as she edged the Bear for the first set, 7-6, with a 7-4 score in the tiebreaker. The first-set loss snapped Juricova's run of eight straight without a defeat. Barte carried momentum into the second set to come away with a hard-fought 6-3 win there.
The match was the fifth time that Juricova and Barte met on the court as singles players. Barte now owns a 4-1 mark in those head-to-head matches. She is the fourth Stanford player to win the All-American Championship singles title; the first since Sandra Birch won back-to-back crowns in 1989-90. Cal has had three singles titles; Susie Babos in 2006-07, and Racquel Kops-Jones in 2003.
