MORAGA, Calif. - California women's tennis sophomores Annie Goransson and Tayler Davis each advanced to the singles semifinal in the Red flight of the 2010 Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Saturday, Oct. 9. As a pair, the two Golden Bears represent the top seed in the doubles tournament and will play in the championship match.
Both Davis and Goransson defeated Stanford opponents in the singles quarterfinal round. Fifth-seeded Goransson drew a match against the fourth seed, No. 124-ranked Carolyn McVeigh and dropped her first set, 6-2, but rebounded to win, 6-4, 6-4, in the second and third. Davis pulled out a three-set upset over third-seeded Nicole Gibbs. The two split 6-2 sets with Davis winning first, before she finished off the three-setter with a 7-5 win in the third.
Goransson will face the top-seeded and No. 60-ranked Jenifer Widjaja of Pacific in one semifinal and Davis draws second-seeded and No. 87-ranked Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's in the other semifinal.
In the Red doubles quarterfinal, Davis and Goransson defeated the Saint Mary's duo of Alita Fisher and Jenny Jullien, 8-0. The Cal pair moved into the doubles championship match by taking out Pacific's third-seeded tandem of Julia Hansen and Widjaja, 8-4. Davis and Goransson will face the second-seeded team of Catherine Isip and Poorta of Saint Mary's in the final.
