GOLD RIVER, Calif. -
California's varsity eight moved on to the semifinals on the first day of competition Friday at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma. In one of the more exciting races of the morning, Cal's No. 1-ranked varsity eight came from behind to edge fourth-ranked Virginia in heat three, 6:23.79-6:24.95. After the morning heats, the Golden Bears' second varsity eight and varsity four boats also reached the Saturday repechages in their respective NCAA events.
This was the second meeting between the Cal and Virginia top boats, as the Bears defeated the Cavaliers in their season-opening regatta, the Pac-10 Challenge, by 3.5 seconds, 6:51.36-6:54.86, on March 29 in Redwood Shores, Calif.
Second-ranked Brown took the top time in the varsity eight this morning, winning the second heat with a 6:23.12. The top three teams in each varsity eight heat automatically qualified for Saturday's semifinals, which are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. tomorrow. Cal will row in the 8 a.m. semifinal.
The draw for each semifinal was determined after today's 1 p.m. repechage, in which the top three finishers - USC, Washington State and Michigan - qualified for the semifinals.
The Bears' second varsity eight took second place to Ohio State, 6:44.87-6:49.17, in their heat this morning and will next row in the first repechage at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. The top two teams in each of the two repechages will qualify for Sunday's grand final. Brown won the second heat of the second varsity eight with the overall top time, 6:44.46, to reach the grand final along with Ohio State.
The Cal varsity four finished second to Washington in the second heat of their event, 7:31.93-7:36.55, to reach Saturday's 9:15 a.m. repechage. The top two teams in each of the two repechages will qualify for Sunday's grand final. The Huskies qualified for the grand final on 10:15 a.m. on Sunday. Three boats had faster heat times than the Bears, as Virginia (7:27.07), Michigan State (7:31.83) and Brown (7:34.28) finished 1-2-3 in the first heat. Virginia has also qualified for the varsity four grand final.
Saturday's action starts with the first varsity eight semifinal at 8 a.m.
