The Cal women's varsity eight edged Ohio State to capture the bronze medal at the 2002 NCAA Championships on Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, IN, June 2. The varsity's finish also locked up third-place in the Team Points Championship-the highest ever finish for the Bears.
"Going into the varsity eight race, we had done the math and knew the varsity eight had to come in third in order for us to qualify for the third-place team trophy," said coach Dave O'Neill. "We were cheering on that shore like you couldn't believe. The varsity pulled it out. The bronze medal for the varsity boat was the culmination of a lot of little things that we've been working on all year long and it made a big difference when it really counted. I couldn't be happier with how everybody on the team performed."
Washington earned its fourth First Varsity Eight National Championship with a time of 6:36.41. Brown held off a hard-charging California crew to finish second with a time of 6:39.87. Cal finished third with a time of 6:40.96. Ohio State (6:41.11), Princeton (6:44.54) and Stanford (6:52.53) rounded out the scoring in the First Varsity Eight. For the record, Cal's bronze medal was matched the Bears 1999 varsity eight's achievement as the highest ever placing at the NCAA Rowing Championships.
Brown's second place finish in the First Varsity Eight was enough to give it the 2002 NCAA Team National Championship. The Brown finished with 67 points and picked up its third national title in four years. Washington finished second with 63 points and became the first crew to win the Varsity Eight and not win the national title. The Huskies also won two national titles but became the first team to win two titles and not earn the team national championship. California finished third with 44 points and Virginia finished fourth with 43 points.
In the Second Varsity Eight Petite Final, Princeton was victorious with a time of 6:54.60. Ohio State finished second in the Petite Final with a time of 6:55.13 and California finished third with a time of 6:58.90. Harvard (6:59.79), Stanford (7:00.14) and Syracuse (7:03.19) rounded out the scoring in the Petite Final.
In the first event of the day was the Fours competition. In the Petite Final, the University of California-Berkeley was victorious with a time of 7:48.59. Ohio State finished second with a time of 7:51.98 and Princeton finished in third with a time of 7:52.34. Washington (7:54.47), Syracuse (7:59.69) and Stanford (7:59.75) rounded out the Petite Final.
