The Cal women's varsity eight advanced to the grand final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup event at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay after finishing second in its qualifying heat, March 6. The Bears entered the regatta ranked No. 11 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing poll.
"This morning's heat was the first real test for our squad and the first real gague of where we stand." Said coach Dave O'Neill. "I'm happy with the results and after we work on a few things, I'm confident that tomorrow we'll be even faster."
The Bears varsity got off the start in good position and was the first crew to cross the 500-meter mark ahead of No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 3 Ohio State. Notre Dame took over the lead briefly before Ohio State moved to the front of the pack. Cal battled through the third 500 maintaining its grip on second place, but the Buckeye's covered the final 500 meters of the race more efficiently and took the top qualifying spot. Cal finished in front of the Fighting Irish, No. 19 Oregon State, No. 9 USC, Clemson and Tulane. Qualifiers from the other Jessop-Whittier Cup heat included winner No. 1 Washington, No. 13 Stanford and No. 6 Virginia, while Washington State, No. 14 Texas, Miami and Navy missed out on the grand final.
The Bears JV eight took a one length adavantage over the rest if the field in the first 500 meters of its heat and extended its lead finishing well in front of Texas and Notre Dame in the "2 to advance" format. Other crews qualifying for Sunday's grand final include heat-winners, Virginia and Washington, along with Ohio State and Clemson.
The Cal women's novice eight used a strong second 1000 to overtake early leader Stanford claiming the second qualifying spot in its heat. Heat-winner Washington State, Cal, along with Virginia, UCLA, Oregon State and Washington will race for the women's novice title on Sunday.
