2001 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Raquel Kops-Jones remained alive at the Pac-10 championships in Ojai Thursday by defeating Washington State's Erica Perkins in a pair of 6-3 sets to advance to Friday's Round of 8.
While Kops-Jones was the only Bear to make it to Friday in the main draw, two Cal women had success in the Pac-10 Invitational, and will face each other tomorrow morning for their efforts. Freshman Carla Arguelles, who defeated USC's Caroline Christian 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, will be pitted against sophomore Nicole Havlicek, who dropped Chris Martinez of Washington State, 6-3, 6-4 to advance.
On the men's side of the events, John Paul Fruttero, Robert Kowalczyk and Conor Niland all advanced to the second round and all were eliminated there. Similarly in the invitational, which saw freshman Patrick Briaud advance along with Chase Exon and Ben Miles. Like their counterparts in the main draw, all were defeated in the Round of 16. 2001 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Balazs Veress will compete tomorrow in the main draw's consolation round.
The doubles portion of the tournament will also begin tomorrow. Full coverage of the tournament can be found at the Ojai Tournament Website.
