Women's Tennis Wins Ninth in a Row

April 7, 2001

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 6-ranked women's tennis team (13-2, 3-1 Pac-10) extended their winning streak to nine matches when they handed the No. 29-ranked UCLA Bruins a 5-2 loss today at the Hellman Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Bruins drop to 5-13 and 2-3 Pac-10.

The Bears started off the day with a sweep in doubles, although Cal had to work for each point. At No. 1, UCLA's tandem of Petya Marinova and Lauren Fisher, who were ranked No. 20 as a duo by the ITA, took Cal's duo of Anita Kurimay and Raquel Kops-Jones to the wire, yet Cal pulled ahead in the end and grabbed a 9-7 victory.

In singles, Cal won four of six singles points, faltering at the No. 3 and 4 spots. For each of Cal's singles wins, they were done so in straight sets. Catherine Lynch and Sekita Grant lost only one game apiece in their victories over their Bruin competition. Both freshmen won by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores, giving the Bears an early 3-0 advantage over UCLA.

Kurimay sealed the win at No. 1, when she knocked out UCLA's Catherine Hawley, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Christina Fusano struggled early, yet bounced back to down Petya Marinova, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.

Next, the Bears will host No. 1 Stanford, Tuesday, April 10 at 12 noon. Cal hopes to avenge it's only loss in its last thirteen matches.
