The No. 8-ranked California women's tennis team upset No. 5-ranked Texas, 5-2, Friday at the Hellman Tennis Courts. The Bears improved to 9-2 (4-2 Pac-10) with their fifth-straight victory, while the Longhorns fell to 9-2.
Junior Vladka Uhlirova, who is nationally-ranked No. 90 in singles, downed senior Anita Kurimay (6-1, 6-2), giving Kurimay her first loss of the season in dual match competition. In other singles action, Christina Fusano, who held down the No. 2 spot for the Bears, defeated Rebekah Forney in a tough three-set match, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
In doubles action, Cal grabbed the point when the No. 2 and No. 3 tandems walked away with 9-7 and 8-4 victories, respectively. At No. 2, Nicole Havlicek teamed with Jieun Jacobs, while co-captain Christina Fusano and Sekita grant teamed at No. 3. The Longhorns were highlighted by the duo of Uhlirova and Ziva Grasic who pulled past Raquel Kops-Jones and Kurimay, 8-6.
