BERKELEY, Calif-The fourth-ranked Cal women's tennis team found their revenge Friday afternoon, defeating ninth-ranked Arizona State, 7-2 at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. The Sun Devils were one of only three teams to have beaten the Bears this year, defeating them 5-4 on March 4th in Tempe. With the win the Bears move to 15-5 on the year while Arizona State drops to 11-6.
The Bears were impressive from the start, sweeping all six singles matches in relative ease from the visiting Sun Devils. Senior Amy Jensen won her 24th match of the year as she defeated Arizona State's Allison Bradshaw, 6-3, 6-2. Her win clinched the victory for the Bears and was her first appearance in the No. 1 slot since Feb. 26th. The Brisbane, Australia native needs only two more victories to reach 100 wins in her career. In what turned out to be the best match of the day, Cal senior Karoline Borgersen outlasted Megan Yeats, 6-4, 6-7 (7-1), 6-4 in a three-hour marathon match in the No. 4 spot to improve her record to 20-12 on the year.
After being shutout in singles, the Sun Devils rallied back in doubles to win their only match of the day in the No. 3 slot where Faye DeVera and Karin Palme downed Cal's Jenny Lee and Emeka Mayes, 8-3. The Bears were forced to default on court one due to injury, thus giving Arizona State their only other point on the afternoon. In other doubles action, Cal's Claire Curran and Morisa Yang came from behind to defeat Mhairi Brown and Megan Yeats, 8-5.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow, April 15th when they host Arizona in a noon match at Hellman Tennis Center.
