Berkeley, Calif - The No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils scored a huge upset Saturday afternoon, defeating the No. 2 Cal women's tennis team, 5-4. With the loss Cal drops to 7-3 on the year and 4-3 in Pac-10 play.
In singles play the Bears dropped and uncharacteristic four points to the Sun Devils, capturing victories at only the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. Junior Anita Kurimay pulled off her second straight victory in the No. 1 slot, defeating ASU's Karin Palme, 6-3, 6-1. The win moves her to a team leading 17 victories on the year. Claire Curran was the only other Cal player victorious, pulling out a win over Kerry Giardino, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot.
In doubles play, the Bears notched two victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots to tie the score at 4-4 before ASU's Karin Palme and Kerry Giardino clinched a Sun Devil victory by downing Cal's duo of Jenny Lee and Christina Fusano, 9-8 on court three.
The Bears will be back in action on Fri., March 10, when they host William & Mary in a 1:30 match to be held at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley.
