Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 5 Cal women's tennis team claimed their second victory in two days this afternoon, downing the New Mexico Lobos, 7-1 at a match played in Berkeley. The win keeps the Bears undefeated in non-conference play, and moves them to 10-3 overall while remaining 4-3 in Pac-10 play.
The Bears, still sporting an altered lineup as senior Claire Curran missed her second straight match in a row due to illness, grabbed five of the six singles points to assure a Cal victory. Freshman Christina Fusano showed serious poise on court five, pulling out a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 victory over Neza Kurnik. Junior Anita Kurimay won her 10th match in 12 tries, beating New Mexico's Ana Friganovic, 7-5, 6-0 on court one. Senior Amy Jensen seems to be back on track, picking up her second straight win at the No. 2 slot over Ashley Hedberg, 6-0, 7-5.
In doubles action, only two matches were played as a result of Fusano's three-set thriller on court five. In the No. 1 slot, Kurimay and senior Karoline Borgersen pulled down an 8-5 victory over Friganovic and Hedberg of New Mexico. In the No. 2 spot Cal senior Jenny Lee and junior Emeka Mayes cruised to an easy 8-4 victory over Caroline Pollock and Dominika Gerwin. Fusano was scheduled to take the court with partner Amy Jensen but with a Cal win assured, the match was called off.
Catch the Bears in action again Sunday as they host Arkansas in a noon match at the Hellman Tennis Center.
