MADISON, Wis. - The third-ranked Cal women's tennis team edged No. 9 Wake Forest, 5-4, in overtime Saturday to advance to the final of the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament.
The Bears will meet top-rated Stanford for the championship Sunday morning.
Against Wake Forest, Cal (6-0) won the first overtime match in collegiate tennis history. An experimental format is being used for this tournament where a match tie-breaker (first to 10, win by two) is played in place of a third set in singles, teams are awarded two points (instead of one) for sweeping doubles, and the possibility of overtime exists.
The Bears took advantage of the two-point doubles sweep, but Wake Forest tied the match at 4-4 after winning four of the six singles matches. In the overtime, three doubles matches were contested in match tie-breaker format. Cal swept all three doubles OT matches to clinch the OT point and the match.
"We're strong at all three doubles spots," said Cal head coach Jan Brogan. "I have so much experience on my team, and they have gone through so many close matches. They were very calm under pressure."
