ATHENS, Ga. - California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova will defend her NCAA singles title this week as the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships get under way at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Ranked eighth in the country, Juricova holds the sixth seed and will open the round of 64 with a match against No. 20 Kate Turvy of Northwestern at 9:30 a.m. PT on Wednesday, May 23.

The Golden Bears are also represented in the field of 64. 13th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi holds one of the 9-16 seeds and opens her tournament with a 10 a.m. PT matchup against 47th-ranked Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska. 30th-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting draws No. 43 Lindsey Hardenbergh of Virginia in a 7 a.m. PT match, and 48th-ranked junior Tayler Davis gets No. 31 Joelle Kissell of North Carolina State at 8 a.m. PT in her first-round match.

Juricova is 13-2 in the NCAA singles championships. Each of her two losses has come at the hands of Georgia senior Chelsey Gullickson. Gullickson is ranked seventh and seeded eighth, this year. As freshmen, Juricova and Gullickson met in the round of 16 where the Bulldog claimed a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory. As sophomores, Juricova finished as the NCAA runner-up when Gullickson completed a 6-3, 7-6(7) win in the championship match that snapped an incredible 19-match winning streak. As a junior, Juricova broke through and upended Gullickson with a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the quarterfinals on her way to capturing the NCAA crown.

Davis is the only other Cal player with NCAA tournament experience. Selected as a sophomore, Davis fell in her first-round match through three tight sets to Sanaa Bhambri of North Carolina State. Schutting and Susanyi each make their first appearances in the NCAA singles championships.

The Bears also send two doubles teams to the NCAA championships which begin on Thursday, May 24. Cal's fifth-ranked team of Schutting and junior Annie Goransson hold one of four 5-8 seeds and will open the tournament against Duke's 21st-ranked team of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfield. On the other side of the doubles bracket, the Bears' 15th-ranked tandem of Juricova and Susanyi open up against Mississippi's seventh-ranked duo of Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie in the round of 32.

Doubles match times will be determined following the first day of singles matches. Three of Cal's four doubles players have never been to the NCAA championships, but Juricova--who does have experience in the tournament--also has some hardware to go with it. She claimed the 2009 championship as a freshman with partner Mari Andersson; Cal's fifth title. In the two subsequent years, Andersson and Juricova advanced to the round of 16 and then to the semifinals respectively.
