BERKELEY - California softball student-athlete Lindsey Ziegenhirt has both brains and brawns, lending further credence that Golden Bears are the best and the brightest on the field and in the classroom. Ziegenhirt was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic District 8 First-Team, it was announced Friday.
"One of the things that drew me to Cal was its academic excellence," Ziegenhirt noted of her school. "It's always an honor when you're recognized for the hard work you put in. I'm very proud to represent Cal both athletically and academically."
Ziegenhirt has started 41 of Cal's 43 games thus far behind the plate. She is second on the team in RBI with 23 and tied for second with six homers. She currently owns an impressive 3.67 grade-point average as she pursues a degree in psychology.
The teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance in athletics and academics. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
Along with her fellow first-team Academic All-District honorees, Ziegenhirt advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, from which first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
